R3,242 Discovery Miles 32 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although society has become increasingly dependent on the timely operation of logistics systems, we still face many problems regarding efficiency, the environment, energy consumption, and safety in urban transport and logistics under normal cases and in disasters. As such, understanding how to address these challenges has become essential for creating better urban planning and policy implementation.
Presenting the best practices of leading experts from around the world, Urban Transportation and Logistics: Health, Safety, and Security Concerns provides cutting-edge concepts and a vision for urban transport and logistics relating to human security. Its comprehensive coverage supplies the foundation for examining transport and logistics systems in urban areas from the viewpoint of safety and security considerations on human life. Topics covered include:

  • Hazardous material transport
  • Healthy transport
  • Road safety
  • Network design for freight transport and supply chain
  • Transport and logistics in Asian cities
  • Vehicle routing and scheduling with uncertainty
  • Urban transport and logistics in natural disasters
  • Future perspectives on urban freight transport

The book addresses Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and Intelligent Transport System (ITS) applications within urban logistics. It considers supply chains, road safety in hazardous material transport, and logistics and transport design in mixed traffic areas. It also introduces the notion of the megalopolis and the need for improved planning relative to human usage, freight transportation, and city logistic planning.

Eiichi Taniguchi, Russell G Thompson
R6,729 Discovery Miles 67 290 Ships in 15 - 20 working days

Urban freight transport has become an essential issue in urban planning. There are many challenges and problems relating to increasing levels of traffic congestion, negative environmental impacts and energy consumption. To cope with these complicated problems, new city logistics schemes are required that are aimed at increasing the efficiency of urban freight transport systems as well as reducing traffic congestion and impacts on the environment. Recent developments in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) help tackle these difficult problems. As well, the corporate social responsibility of shippers and freight carriers promotes public-private partnerships in urban freight transport planning.
This book, Recent Advances in City Logistics, is an outcome of the Fourth International Conference on City Logistics (City Logistics IV held in Langkawi in 2005) organised by the Institute for City Logistics (www.citylogistics.org). It includes recent developments in the modelling, evaluation and planning of city logistics schemes. Since city logistics measures have already been implemented in several cities, a review of the performance of these innovative schemes is presented. As well, an overview of the data collection for modelling, evaluating and benchmarking city logistics schemes and intermodal freight transport for city logistics is given. Recent developments and applications of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems) in city logistics are covered.

Urban freight transport has become an important issue in urban planning. There are many challenges and problems relating to increasing levels of traffic congestion, environmental impacts and energy consumption. City logistics schemes are relatively new concepts that are aimed at increasing the efficiency of urban freight transport systems as well as reducing traffic congestion and impacts on the environment. However, new modelling, evaluation and planning techniques are required to conduct in-depth investigations before city logistics measures can be effectively deployed.

This book, Logistics Systems for Sustainable Cities, is an outcome of the Third International Conference on City Logistics (City Logistics III held in Madeira in 2003) organised by the Institute for City Logistics (www.citylogistics.org). It includes recent developments in the modelling, evaluation and planning of city logistics schemes. Since city logistics measures have already been implemented in several cities, a review of the performance of these innovative schemes is presented. As well, an overview of the visions for city logistics and public private partnerships for city logistics is given. A summary of the OECD report, Delivering the Goods ??? 21st Century Challenges for Urban Goods Transport, is included. Recent developments in e-Commerce and e-Logistics are covered.

The cover shows the beautiful Madeira Island, Portugal where the Third International Conference on City Logistics was held.

City Logistics - Network Modelling and Intelligent Transport Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed): Eiichi Taniguchi, Russell G Thompson City Logistics - Network Modelling and Intelligent Transport Systems (Hardcover, 1st ed)
Eiichi Taniguchi, Russell G Thompson
R4,887 Discovery Miles 48 870 Ships in 15 - 20 working days

This book presents fundamental concepts and general approaches to City Logistics. City Logistics is the process of totally optimising urban logistics activities by considering the social, environmental, economic, financial and energy impacts of urban freight movement. City Logistics initiatives are required to solve urban freight transport problems including high levels of traffic congestion, negative environmental impacts, high energy consumption and a shortage of labour.
The focus of this work is on modelling City Logistics. Modelling is of crucial importance, since estimates of the impacts generated by City Logistics measures are required for evaluating them. It highlights the formulation of mathematical models of vehicle routing and scheduling with Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), optimal terminal locations and impact estimation by City Logistics measures. Heuristics techniques such as genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and tabu search are also given to identify approximate optimal solution of these combinatorial optimisation problems.
ITS provides powerful tools for efficiently managing and operating vehicle fleets. Sophisticated logistics systems can now be developed by integrating Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) in conjunction with application software. In this context, the book presents a theoretical and practical treatment of modelling City Logistics based on ITS.
